SUMMARY:AER/I Chemistry Seminar
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:Title: Portable Biosensor for On-spot Melamine Detection in Infant Formula and Dairy Products\n\nFatima Obe\n\nAbstract: Melamine (C3H6N6) and its derivatives are high-production-volume chemicals that are widely used in the production of ready-to-assemble furniture, disinfectants, laminate floors, kitchenware etc. Because of its high nitrogen content (66.7%), melamine was sometimes added to food products in order to raise the apparent protein content. In 2008, about 300,000 Chinese infants were reported affected by kidney related diseases due to melamine-adulterated infant foods. Notable among the techniques that have been used for melamine quantification is mass spectrometry. Zhu and Kannan in 2018 employed mass spectrometric technique coupled with hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC-MS) in analyzing infant formula (IF) and dairy products (DP). 52 IF and 42 DP, including milk, yogurt, cheese, and butter, as well as bread were analyzed for melamine and its derivatives. ΣMelamine (sum of melamine and its derivatives) was found in IF, milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, and bread at median concentrations of 4.8, 7.9, 5.1, 17, 4.2, and 7.5 ng/g, respectively. While the MS technique does an excellent job in terms of selectivity and sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.03 ng/g), complex instrumentations, long analysis time and high cost are usually involved. Recently, Fan et al., developed a distance-based biosensor (the ET-NB sensor), based on electrophoretic titrations (ET) of moving neutralization boundary (NB), that is simple, cheap and portable, for melamine quantification in IF and DP. Good selectivity, good repeatability and high sensitivity (LOD 0.20 μM for milk and 0.10 μM for IF vs the FDA safety limits of 20 μM for milk and 8.0 μM for IF) were achieved with the ET-NB system.\n\nNOTE: Please note that the meeting will be locked at 3:10 p.m., so all attendees should login in early as they will not be able to view the seminar if they log in after 3:10 p.m.\n\nZoom Invite Information:\n\nImportant Note: Both internal and external WSU meeting attendees must be signed into Zoom to join the meeting.\n\nPlease refer to this guide on Joining WSU Zoom Meetings before trying to join the meeting:\n\nhttps://confluence.esg.wsu.edu/display/KB/Zoom+-+Joining+Meetings+and+Best+Practices\n\nJoin from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/99011537950?pwd=YlYwbVllMHpnc0FML2xsYWJmY21XUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 990 1153 7950\n\nPasscode: 063694\n\nDate & Time: Mar 19, 2021 03:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin from WSU Conference Room System (Polycom)\n\n1.
