SUMMARY:AER/I Chemistry Seminar with Hannah Johnson
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Hannah Johnson\n\nGroup: Moreau\n\nTitle: Optimizing Metal-Organic Framework Adsorbents for the Recovery of Uranium from Seawater\n\nAbstract: Nuclear power, fueled by uraniumoxide, is an increasingly significant source of global energy due to its low carbon emissions and high efficiency. However, the current mineable supply of uranium is being depleted at a rate of 1% every year, and new sources and methods of uranium recovery will be required to sustain nuclear power as a viable energy source. The world ocean contains one thousand times more uranium than is available in terrestrial deposits at a very dilute level of 3.3ppb, and an extraction technology that is selective and efficient at such low concentrations could potentially sustain the global uranium demand indefinitely. Solid adsorbents, specifically metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are one class of material that has shown great promise for oceanic uranium extraction, but further optimization is required prior to large-scale applications, namely with regards to the maximum uranium uptake capacity and the adsorption kinetics. Recent studies have demonstrated two effective strategies, functionalization and defect induction, that drastically improve the performance of MOFs as uranium adsorbents by different mechanisms. Both alteration methods, as applied to a representative MOF species UiO-66, are discussed and compared, and some final considerations of this technology’s practicality and applicability are presented.\n\nZoom Information:\n\nImportant Note: Both internal and external WSU meeting attendees must be signed into Zoom to join the meeting.\n\nPlease refer to this guide on Joining WSU Zoom Meetings before trying to join the meeting:\n\nhttps://confluence.esg.wsu.edu/display/KB/Zoom+-+Joining+Meetings+and+Best+Practices\n\nJoin from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/93950840487?pwd=UFZwRnlKK09JOXFGdjFaWEhaNHFOdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 939 5084 0487\n\nPasscode: 418252\n\nDate & Time: Apr 30, 2021 03:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)
