DESCRIPTION:Title: Alternative sensing approaches using paper-based devices\n\nAbstract: Over the past decade, paper-based devices have made a significant impact in the field of analytical chemistry, and more specifically on point-of-care diagnostics. Two of papers most desirable characteristics, stemming from its three-dimensional fibrous structure, are the ability to both store and transport chemicals within its hydrophilic fibre matrix through capillary wicking, without the need of external pumps. Furthermore, paper-based devices are (i) easily patternable with wax printers (i.e., to define microfluidic zones), (ii) mass-produced, (iii) low-cost, and (iv) easily disposed of through incineration.  Considering these properties, it is not surprising that paper-based sensors have been developed for various target analytes in fields ranging from environmental forensics to human health. This literature review will cover some of the most notable examples of paper-based diagnostics highlighting the relevant advantages and disadvantages of employing paper as a substrate in the fabrication of point-of-care analytical devices.
