SUMMARY:BLACK HISTORY MONTH Part 3: Culture as Living History
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 3-part Black History Month virtual series.\n\nSeries theme: Beyond the Headlines: Human Stories and Lived History\n\nSeries goal: Explore people, moments, and cultural traditions in an intentional, reflective, humanized way—so they aren’t reduced to dates, statistics, or names in a textbook.\n\nIn this final event for our series, we will explore food, music, and the arts not only as cultural expressions, but as historical records—carrying stories of survival, adaptation, joy, and identity across generations. We will examine examples like tea cakes, shaped by enslaved peoples’ creativity and preserved through oral tradition—often shared today in connection with Juneteenth celebrations. \n\nThrough music and artistic expression, we’ll trace how Black communities have preserved memory, resisted dehumanization, and created beauty that reshaped American culture.
