DESCRIPTION:\n\nNationally recognized writer and podcaster Leah Sottile will discuss the news media's fractured and incomplete coverage of rural America.\n\nSottile teamed up with Oregon Public Broadcasting to produce "Bundyville," a seven-part podcast on the 2016 armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. The New Yorker said the podcast provides "a rich and often surprising context to these events." Sottile's work has appeared in The Washington Post, Outside, The Atlantic, and several others national publications.\n\nHer talk, "Bundyville: A Story About the Rest of America," explores her work as a freelancer digging for the deeper story behind the often breathless media coverage of the standoff. Her talk is sponsored by the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication through the Charlotte Friel Memorial Communication Lecture series. The lecture was established in 1973 by Jack and Catherine Friel in memory of their daughter, Charlotte Friel, a 1951 graduate of WSU.\n\nThe purpose of the lecture series is to create an opportunity for a professional in mass communications to discuss current news media trends with WSU faculty and students.\n\n \n\n \n\n
