DESCRIPTION:There will be cookies!\n\nDescription\n\nIn this lecture, Dr. Ashley Boyd and doctoral candidate Rachael Wolney will share about a recent project, Palouse Reads, in which they engaged for six months in 2023. Local community members were invited to join in the reading of young adult literature about social topics such as mental health and food insecurity, and representatives from organizations in the area attended to share their connections to the books’ foci. Text overviews and community connections will be discussed as well as themes that emerged across the dialogues. Participants from the project will also share their experiences and offer insights on the impact of the literature and the discussions.\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\nAshley S. Boyd (she/her)​ is an associate professor of English education and Director of University Common Requirements (UCORE) at Washington State University. She teaches courses on English Methods and Young Adult Literature and researches practicing teachers’ social justice pedagogies as well as avenues for cultivating students’ critical literacies. She is author of Social Justice Literacies in the English Classroom and co-author (with Janine J. Darragh) of Reading for Justice: Engaging Middle Level Readers in Social Action through Young Adult Literature.\n\nRachael R. Wolney is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English at Washington State University. Her research interests include Disability Studies, Young Adult Literature, and Education. She teaches using disability studies pedagogy in a range of literature and writing courses, but specifically enjoys working with pre-service teachers and practicing teachers in learning about disability.\n\nPanelists include Palouse Region community members:, Dr. Raymond Sun, Eleanor Dizon, and Katie Vandemark.\n\n
