SUMMARY:Chemistry Department Seminar with Arden Perkins
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Arden Perkins: Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon\n\nHost: Chulhee Kang\n\nTitle: Sulfur oxidation at the center of bacterial pathogenesis\n\nAbstract: Sulfur oxidation chemistry is an ancient mechanism by which cells mediate redox stress. Sulfur oxidation plays important roles in bacterial diseases, where immune cells strive to kill invading bacteria through the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and bacteria sense and eliminate these toxins through proteins with sulfur oxidation-based mechanisms. My talk will examine the structural basis for these reactions, the surprising finding that some bacterial pathogens are attracted to bleach (HOCl), and the possibility of targeting these bacterial proteins with novel antibiotics.\n\nZoom Information:\n\nImportant Note: Both internal and external WSU meeting attendees must be signed into Zoom to join the meeting.\n\nPlease refer to this guide on Joining WSU Zoom Meetings before trying to join the meeting:\n\nhttps://confluence.esg.wsu.edu/display/KB/Zoom+-+Joining+Meetings+and+Best+Practices\n\nJoin from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/92181275163?pwd=YzdqcXlPMkFDYUFmZG5KWFJYVm1SUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 921 8127 5163\n\nPasscode: 953262\n\nPhone Call (long distance)\n\n+1 253 215 8782\n\n+12532158782,,92181275163# US (One Tap Mobile Call)\n\n
