SUMMARY:Colloquium: Physics & Astronomy – Hergen Eilers
LOCATION:Webster Physical Science Building, Pullman, WA 99163
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Hergen Eilers, WSU Institute for Shock Physics/Applied Sciences Laboratory.\n\nMeet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.\n\nAbstract:\n\nOur research focuses on the development of novel optical sensors and optical spectroscopy approaches. I will describe several examples, including our work on using spatial light modulation in combination with digital optical phase conjugation to focus light inside a scattering material; how we use Raman spectroscopy to identify the oxidation state of a metal oxide and thereby help reduce the emission of CO2 from fossil fuel power plants; and the development of optical sensors that, through irreversible phase transitions, can help fire and arson investigators determine the origin of a fire.\n\n
