DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Assefaw Gebremedhin, Associate Professor, Washington State University\n\nAbstract: The VICEROY Northwest Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CySER) provides students the opportunity to earn a cybersecurity certificate alongside their four-year degree. CySER students participate in seminars, mentored research projects, student club activities, cyber competition and capture-the-flag events, and a multi-faceted summer workshop. In this kick-off seminar for the Fall 2026 semester, Dr. Gebremedhin along with CySER Program Coordinator Dr. James Crabb will cover important information for new and returning CySER students, including:\n\n\n\n 	Expectations for VICEROY CySER Scholars\n\n 	Ways to engage with cybersecurity student club (Cyber Security Group)\n\n 	CySER mentored research expectations and opportunities\n\n 	Scholarship and fellowship opportunities (including SFS, IRES, CSA)\n\n\n\nBiography: Assefaw Gebremedhin is the Berry Family Distinguished Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University, where he leads the Scalable Algorithms for Data Science (SCADS) Lab. He is also the Director and Lead PI of the VICEROY CySER Institute, Director of the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) program at WSU, and Director of the NSF International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program with Linkoping University (LiU) in Sweden in cybersecurity and AI.
