SUMMARY:Department of Chemistry Seminar – Dr. Harilal (Hari) Sivanandan
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Harilal (Hari) Sivanandan,\n\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA 99352\n\nHost: James Boncella\n\nTitle: Optical Spectroscopic tools for nuclear nonproliferation\n\nAbstract: Currently, isotopic analysis of nuclear materials is predominantly laboratory-based (mass spectroscopy) which is time consuming and not useful for field applications. Optical spectroscopic methods (emission, absorption, and fluorescence) in conjunction with laser ablation sampling have the potential to overcome these limitations with capabilities for in-field, rapid, and non-contact analysis. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a proven technology for standoff detection of all elements in the periodic table, however, spectral and instrumental broadening affect its performance for isotopic analysis. On the other hand, laser-absorption spectroscopy provides spectral resolution for isotopic analysis, but it requires orthogonal beam interrogation geometry. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy incorporates aspects of both atomic absorption and emission and is capable of overcoming limitations of both emission and absorption spectroscopy methods for isotopic analysis. In this presentation, recent developments on isotopic analysis of U metal and compounds using optical spectroscopy will be given. The influence of U plasma chemistry on optical signatures (emission, LIF etc.) and applications of laser-produced plasma as a surrogate for high explosion fireball chemistry will also be discussed.\n\nShort Biography: Sivanandan (Hari) Harilal is a chief scientist at PNNL. His research at PNNL focuses on optical spectroscopic tools for standoff isotopic detection, actinide plasma chemistry, optical modeling of high explosions etc. He received his Ph.D. in plasma physics from Cochin University of Science & Technology, India in 1998. Prior to joining PNNL in 2014, he worked as a faulty at the School of Nuclear Engineering, Purdue University and was a member of fusion groups at the University of California San Diego, CA and Argonne National Laboratory, IL. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards which include the Alexander Humboldt fellowship (AvH, Germany), Stocks lectureship (SFI, Ireland), CSIR research fellowship (Govt. of India) and excellence in research awards from PNNL and Purdue. He has authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index of 48. He is a fellow of Optical Society of America and associate editor of Optics Letters.\n\n************************************************************************************\n\nZOOM INFORMATION:\n\nJoin from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/91571049515?pwd=Y3JHNTRWWVlYZ1h3YkRSY20vYnlHdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 915 7104 9515\n\nPasscode: 052239\n\nPlease refer to this guide on Joining WSU Zoom Meetings before trying to join the meeting.\n\nhttps://confluence.esg.wsu.edu/display/KB/Zoom+-+Joining+Meetings+and+Best+Practices\n\nNote: Zoom Account authentication is required to join this meeting.\n\nJoin from WSU Conference Room System (Polycom)\n\n1.
