SUMMARY:Guest Speaker Series: Student Employment Contributes to Student Success
LOCATION:Compton Union Building
DESCRIPTION:The Division of Student Affairs presents Dr. Amelia Parnell, Omari Burnside, and Alexa Wesley from the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Educations (NASPA). Our guest speakers will share results from the national research study exploring the current conditions of on-campus employment, as well as promising student employment practices intended to improve student success.\n\nSESSION TOPIC: MAXIMIZING STUDENT EMPLOYMENT AT WSU\n\nWhen operationalized effectively, on-campus employment can provide students with a greater sense of financial security, while also improving learning, career-readiness, engagement, and persistence outcomes. Recognizing these benefits, many institutions have advanced the use of federal work-study and institution-funded campus-based employment programs as part of an overall student success strategy.\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKERS:\n\nDr. Amelia Parnell serves as the vice president for research and policy at NASPA and directs NASPA’s Research and Policy Institute (RPI), which links research, policy, and effective student affairs practice in support of student success. Omari Burnside serves as the assistant vice president for strategy and practice at NASPA—providing him with the opportunity to research and develop tools on effective student success practices. Alexa Wesley assists Dr. Parnell as a research and policy associate at NASPA in RPI, contributing to publications, blogs, and research relating to student learning and success outcomes.\n\nWith the support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Parnell, Omari, and Alexa analyzed student employment practices nationwide to understand its impact on student retention. While at WSU, they are looking forward to engaging in conversation with WSU faculty and staff, system-wide, regarding their national findings, the student employment experience at WSU, and exploring the matters affecting our profession like free speech, enrollment management, safety, mental health, and Title IX. Access to resources will be made available on behalf of NASPA, putting policy into practice at WSU.\n\nFind more information about our presenters on the Student Affairs webpage. \n\n \n\n \n\n
