DESCRIPTION:Field to Lab to Field: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Public Health Entomology\n\n\n\nMaureen Laroche, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, University of Texas Medical Branch; Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Global Health and Emerging Diseases\n\n>Dr. Maureen Laroche is a medical entomologist and a clinical bacteriologist from Martinique. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch where she leads a multidisciplinary team focused on the study of the eco-epidemiology of vector-borne bacterial diseases. She is the Director of the RABID (Research in Arthropod-Borne Infectious Diseases) Program, which aims to strengthen capacity in vector-borne disease research and create sustainable networks to streamline outbreak response in the United States.\n\n>From protein-based assays to screwworm fly release strategies and community outreach, Dr. Laroche will present an overview of her lab activities at the intersection of clinical microbiology, medical entomology and eco-epidemiology. Initial observations and samples from the field are leveraged in the laboratory to develop assays, characterize zoonotic cycles, identify risk factors of infection, and build eco-epidemiological models. The results are then used to improve vector-borne disease surveillance in the field, meet with stakeholders to reduce exposure to vector-borne pathogens, inform vector control strategies, and conduct education campaigns\n\n\n\nPaul G. Allen School for Global Health.
