DESCRIPTION:\n\nPRESENTER: Dr. Nick Catanzaro, Senior Research Associate, University of North Carolina\n\nTitle: Exploring the merbecovirus threat space using small animal models and translational countermeasures\n\nDr. Catanzaro is currently a senior research associate in Ralph Baric's lab at the University of North Carolina. Nick's research spans several different viruses, including coronaviruses of all sorts, influenza, flaviviruses and  alphaviruses, and encompasses a wide range of topics from basic molecular virology to translational medicine. He will be presenting his work on merbecoviruses, including MERS-CoV and related zoonotic strains. These strains pose an ongoing risk to human health due to their extraordinary genetic diversity and capacity for cross-species transmission. Small animal models and reverse-genetics based systems are useful tools in defining viral host range and pathogenesis, while enabling evaluation of antiviral countermeasures. Together, these approaches provide a framework for anticipating zoonotic emergence and guiding the development of broadly effective antiviral interventions.\n\n\n\nPaul G.
