SUMMARY:March 18: Kori Newkirk Artist Talk
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Fine Arts presents an artist talk with Los Angeles-based artist Kori Newkirk, supported by the Forst Endowed Visiting Artist Program.\n\nKori Newkirk creates mixed media artworks often inspired from cast-off objects found in his local environs of downtown Los Angeles. By using unpredictable materials such as pony beads, pomade and hair extensions, Newkirk astounds us by articulating complex ideas about our cultural memory. Newkirk’s provocative works, inflected and informed by his African-American heritage, poignantly remind us of our racist inhumanity. Newkirk continually reinvents his practice, rethinking cultural notions of beauty, exploring issues of narcissism, celebrity and spectacle in the political arena, and taking his practice into new unexpected directions.\n\nKori Newkirk received his MFA from the University of California, Irvine and his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to a monographic survey at The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Newkirk has had solo exhibitions at The Project (New York), LAXART, MC (Los Angeles), the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Locust Projects (Miami), and group exhibitions at MOCA Los Angeles, Gagosian Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the 2006 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum, 7th Dakar Biennial (Senegal), Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Norway) and many more.\n\nPictured: Kori Newkirk, Rank, 2008\n\nMarch 18 via Zoom, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Pacific\n\nMore Info & Register at https://finearts.wsu.edu/event/kori-newkirk-artist-talk/
