DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\n\nPROGRAM NOTES\n\nNew York Connections featuring the Solstice Wind Quintet\n\nThe Solstice Wind Quintet will perform works by Valerie Coleman, David Maslanka, and WSU Regents Professor Gregory Yasinitsky. This program “New York Connections” brings together three composers with ties to the New York area. African-American flutist and composer, Valerie Coleman wrote her Afro-Cuban Concerto (2001) for the Imani Winds, a New York-based wind quintet which she founded in the 1990s. The Imani Winds are one of the leading and groundbreaking wind quintets in the US. David Maslanka’s Quintet No. 2 (1987) was originally premiered by the Manhattan Wind Quintet in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The work incorporates blues scales, chorales, and technical virtuosity to deliver a thrilling and diverse work. The concert also features Greg Yasinitsky’s Wooden Miniatures (1994), originally written for Solstice and the dedication of the new library at WSU. This performance of Yasinitsky’s work is in honor of his dedication, commitment, and service to Washington State University.\n\nThe Solstice Wind Quintet’s personnel includes WSU faculty Sophia Tegart, flute; Keri E. McCarthy, oboe; Shannon Scott, clarinet; Martin King, horn; and Jacqueline Wilson, bassoon.
