SUMMARY:Opera Workshop
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:The music of 20th Century American composer, Seymour Barab, will be featured in the WSU Opera Workshop performance on Thursday, November 16 at 8:00 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre. Although he composed art songs and instrumental works, he is most known for his operas, composing 4 full length and 38 one-act operas before his death in 2014.\n\nDirected by Dr. Julie Anne Wieck and accompanied by Dr. Michael Seregow, the program will consist of two one-act comic operas, each with a moral to the story. A Game of Chance involves the visitation of a Representative, a messenger of fate, to three young women, each with her own special dream. After their dreams come true, they each realize that it wasn’t all they had hoped and they didn’t ask for enough. The other one-act opera, Chanticleer, is based on one of the stories from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales about a vain rooster who becomes entrapped by a flattering fox. Along with the Widow who owns the farm and Chanticleer’s wife, Pertelote, the rooster and fox have important lessons to learn.\n\nThe performance is free and open to the public.
