These functions encompass metabolism, detoxification, protein synthesis, secretion of cytokines and growth factors, and regulation of immune and inflammatory responses. Disruption or perturbation of liver functions can lead to severe systemic complications, including conditions like hepatocellular carcinoma, drug-induced liver failure, hepatitis, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Alarmingly, over two million people suffer from liver disorders every year on a global scale. Hepatocytes, the predominant liver cells, are frequently implicated in most liver disorders, underscoring their significance in understanding and treating these conditions. Unfortunately, current treatment options for advanced and severe hepatic diseases are limited, primarily due to the challenge of effectively delivering therapeutic agents to these key liver cells. Nanomedicines have received significant attention in the field of liver targeted drug delivery and offer innovative solutions for hepatic drug delivery through both active and passive targeting mechanisms. This talk will discuss the challenges in hepatic drug delivery, as well as the latest advancements in nanotechnology-based approaches. These innovations hold the promise of enhancing intracellular delivery of therapeutics, thus offering new hope for the treatment of liver diseases.
