SUMMARY:Percussion Ensemble
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:The WSU Percussion Ensemble will perform a varied program from classical percussion ensemble works to a new major composition written by Nathan Daughtrey. The ensemble will also perform arrangements of the music of jazz guitarist Pat Metheny featuring graduate student, Thulani Mason and director, David Jarvis on vibraphone.\n\nThe concert will open with Amadeo Roldán’s Ritmicas No. 5 & 6. Composed in 1930, they are considered to be the first works for percussion ensemble (they precede Varese’s Ionization by a year).\n\n\n\nThe main work on the concert is Nathan Daughtrey’s As Above, So Below. This 15 minute, three-movement work is written for a large group of 12 players and piano performing on a large list of percussion instruments. As Above, So Below delves into the universe of Norse mythology. The work centers on Yggdrasil, the “Tree of Life” (see picture) with branches that extend to all nine of the worlds that make up the Norse mythological universe. The tree’s three roots connect three of these worlds—Asgard, Niflheim, and Jötenheim—which make up the three movements of the piece.\n\nThis concert is open to the public and without charge.
