SUMMARY:Physics and Astronomy Colloquium – Dr. Charles Clark
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Dr. Charles Clark, Department of Physics, University of Maryland & Joint Quantum Institute. Dr. Clark will present his talk, “Neutron particles and neutron waves”, Tuesday, October 17 at 4:10 pm in Webster 17.\n\nMeet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10pm in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall. \n\nAbstract: I present a simple overview of the particle and wave properties of the neutron,\n\nwith emphasis on their similarities to and differences from light. Neutron\n\ninterferometry enables one to realize the quantum limit of the Young double slit\n\nexperiment, when only one neutron is ever present in the interferometer. How\n\ncan only one neutron go through both slits? We have used neutron\n\ninterferometry and holography to address some of the questions of structured\n\nwaves of light and matter that have been studied recently with electrons, atoms\n\nand photons.
