DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Russell Bisset, Faculty Candidate. Dr. Bisset will present their talk, “Quantum gases and the next generation of quantum liquids.”\n\nMeet for refreshments before the lecture from 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.\n\nAbstract: Cooled to nano-Kelvin temperatures, dilute gases acquire macroscopic quantum properties, observable with a camera and thus opening a window directly into the exotic world of quantum physics. Such quantum gases provide key platforms for the development of novel quantum technologies – an important cornerstone for the second quantum revolution that is now gaining momentum. Over the last few years, landmark experiments have pushed the boundaries of what is possible by coaxing quantum gases to form novel phases of matter with truly counter-intuitive properties. These include ultra-dilute self-bound liquids and supersolids, simultaneously exhibiting superfluidity and solid-like properties. Exploration of the exciting physics has only just begun, with numerous unanswered questions and further surprises surely lying just over the horizon. I will review recent advances in the field and then outline my research agenda for the next few years.\n\nphysics.wsu.edu/events/colloquium
