SUMMARY:Physics & Astronomy Colloquium – Dr. Charles Marcus
LOCATION:Webster Physical Science Building, Pullman, WA 99163
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Charles Marcus, Boeing Johnson Professor, Materials Science & Engineeering, and Dept. of Physics, University of Washington. Dr. Marcus’ talk, “New Views of a Classic (but not Classical) System: The Josephson Junction Array” will be held Thursday, November 7th, at 12:10pm in Webster B11. \n\n Please meet our guest speaker and share in refreshments 11:45 a.m. -12:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.\n\nZoom is available for this colloquium. Attendance in person is required by students enrolled in PHYS 590. \n\nTwo superconductors separated by a insulating barrier form a Josephson junction, a circuit element used in a variety of applications from magnetic field sensors to qubits. Covering a two-dimensional plane with a carpet of Josephson junctions creates an interesting medium for studying two-dimensional classical and quantum phase transitions. This talk presents an updated approach to this classic (but not classical) synthetic 2D material by using semiconductors as the insulating barrier, taking advantage of a new kind of epitaxial material growth: the superconductor-semiconductor hybrid.
