SUMMARY:The School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Seminar Series, “Intelligence Accelerated – Where Memory, Manufacturing, and AI Thrive” Presented by Robert Gifford
LOCATION:Engineering Teaching Research Laboratory (ETRL), Pullman, WA
DESCRIPTION:Intelligence Accelerated – Where Memory, Manufacturing, and AI Thrive\n\nPresented by Robert Gifford, Director, DRAM Yield Enhancement, Micron Technology, Inc.\n\nAbstract:\n\nArtificial intelligence is reshaping nearly every field of engineering, while placing unprecedented demands on the memory and manufacturing technologies that support it. Micron Technology is at the heart of this transformation and, through its innovations and manufacturing expertise, is meeting the demands of AI systems while incorporating AI solutions in its own operations. This seminar examines the relationship between AI growth and semiconductor innovation, including the need for greater bandwidth, capacity, energy efficiency, and manufacturing precision. Drawing on more than two decades of experience in semiconductor manufacturing and technology development at Micron, Robert Gifford will connect these industry trends with the evolving role of engineers in an AI-enabled world.\n\nThe presentation will then explore how generative AI is changing engineering application development by enabling subject-matter experts to translate domain knowledge directly into working analyses, code, and tools. Shorter feedback loops make it possible to test ideas, identify failures, and refine questions in minutes or hours rather than through lengthy handoffs in the traditional model. The talk will emphasize that although AI can accelerate experimentation and expand the roles of engineers, we must remain accountable for validating results through the fundamentals of our education and experience.\n\nBiography:\n\nRobert Gifford is Director of TD Yield Enhancement at Micron Technology, with over 22 years of experience advancing semiconductor manufacturing in yield improvement and defect inspection across Manufacturing and R&D. Raised near Spokane, Washington he earned BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University, where MEMS research sparked his passion for semiconductor processing and characterization. At Micron, Robert has grown to appreciate the collaborative nature of engineering, with experience leading teams in the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan.
