SUMMARY:The School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Seminar Series, “Research at Manufacturing Processes and Machinery Lab” Presented by Dr. Arda Gozen
LOCATION:Engineering Teaching Research Laboratory (ETRL), Pullman, WA
DESCRIPTION:Research at Manufacturing Processes and Machinery Lab \n\nAbstract:\n\nThis presentation showcases the research performed at Manufacturing Processes and Machinery Lab at the School of MME at WSU. Technological advancement of manufacturing processes requires (1) a thorough understanding of the physical mechanisms through which raw materials are converted to functional products and (2) the implementation of machinery that is capable of precisely controlling these mechanisms to ensure desired manufactured product properties are achieved. In MPML, we specialize in research on these two directions within the application domains of additive manufacturing and biomanufacturing. In the additive manufacturing domain, our efforts focus on polymer composite and ceramics manufacturing through processing of filled polymer precursors where we aim to elucidate and optimize layer-by layer formation of parts and their microstructure dictated by filler organization. In the biomanufacturing front, our efforts focus on engineering of artificial articular cartilage. To this end, we design multi-functional bioreactors and implement machine learning powered closed loop control systems to understand and optimize the chondrogenesis process toward fabricating articular cartilage that mimics the functional properties of the native tissue.\n\nBiography:\n\nDr. Arda Gozen is the George and Joan Berry Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering of Washington State University. He serves as the director of the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute and Frank Innovation Zone at Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. He is the recipient of the 2019 NSF CAREER and WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture Junior Faculty Research awards. He is the author of over 35 journal publications, numerous conference proceedings, and holds 2 patents.
