DESCRIPTION:AUDIENCE: Animal producers, agricultural stakeholders, animal scientists, veterinarians, veterinary medicince students\n\nThis seminar will focus on the production and health implications for dairy cattle exposed to air pollutants in wildfire smoke. It will discuss the current state of research efforts in this area and cover practical guidelines for minimizing adverse outcomes associated with smoke inhalation in livestock and monitoring animals during and after wildfire episodes.\n\nPRESENTER: Amy Skibiel, PhD; University of Idaho\n\nDr. Skibiel is an Associate Professor of Lactation Physiology in the Department of Animal, Veterinary and Food Sciences at the University of Idaho. Her research explores how environmental perturbations, particularly thermal stress and poor air quality from wildfires, alter metabolic and mammary processes, shape development, and impact immune function as well as the consequences for growth, lactation performance, and health. She also investigates the long-term impacts of environmental insults during prenatal and early postnatal life on animal physiology and health. Dr. Skibiel serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Dairy Science and Fire Ecology and has held various leadership positions within the American Dairy Science Association since 2021.
