DESCRIPTION:The WSU School of Music will present its 31st annual Vocal Extravaganza on Friday, November 4 at 8:00 pm in Bryan Hall Theatre on the Pullman campus as part of the celebration of Dad’s Weekend activities.  This vocal showcase of the five choral ensembles in the School will feature short performances by the Madrigal Singers, Treble Choir, Tenor/Bass Choir, Concert Choir and Opera Workshop.  With so many vocal styles of music performed, you will certainly hear music that is “your favorite.”\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\n\nMadrigal/Chamber Singers will perform Renaissance madrigals that portray famous women’s names of that period including Amaryllis, Cloris, Phyllis, and Flaminia.  Select works include “Thus Saith My Cloris,” “Weep, Weep Mine Eyes” and “Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis” by John Wilbye, “Though Amaryllis Dance in Green” by William Byrd, and “Phyllis, Farewell” by Thomas Bateson.  “Al turbar de’bei lumi” by female Renaissance composer Vittoria Aleotti will also be featured.\n\nTwo new choirs at WSU, Treble Choir and Tenor/Bass Choir, both under the direction of Dean Luethi, will present their first public performances.  Treble Choir will perform four works of human’s interaction with nature. Their program will begin with Estonian Uno Naisso’s Metsa Telegramme (The Woodpecker’s Warning) followed by Andrea Ramsey’s Lineage. Their portion of the program will close with There Will Come Soft Rains from Kevin Memley’s Impressions and Anders Edenroth’s Bumble Bee made popular by Swedish ensemble The Real Group.\n\nThe Tenor/Bass Choir will perform 5 selections, beginning with Kirby Shaw’s arrangements of 16 Tons and Man of La Mancha. Willie Taylor is an Irish folksong which tells of a foolish young man whose life was ended by his estranged lover. This song was adapted by Luethi from the performance of the song by Irish folk group Cran. Their portion of the program will conclude with Like a Mighty Eagle by Louis Spohr, arranged by Morten Luvaas, and Bui Doi from Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s music Miss Saigon.\n\nWSU Concert Choir will perform selections connected by the theme “Rhythm of Life” which includes selections from Daniel Elder’s Three Themes of Life and Love for choir and percussion featuring percussion faculty David Jarvis and soloists Maarika Vercamer and Katie Berndt, “I Am Not Yours” by David N. Childs set to poetry by Sara Teasdale, and the Moses Hogan arrangement of the spiritual “I’m Gonna Sing ‘Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart” featuring senior vocal performance majors Andrew Turner and Ryan Lustgarten, and sopranos Maarika Vercamer and Mali McEnderfer.  Graduate student Frankie Bones, pursing a Master’s in piano performance in the School of Music, is the accompanist of Concert Choir.\n\nThe singers from Opera Workshop will present portions of their production, Princesses and Pirates:  A Celebration of Gilbert and Sullivan.  Scenes from two of the comic operettas composed by the team of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will be performed.  Princess Ida takes place at a women’s college, founded by the lead character in order to avoid an arranged marriage.  The walls are breached, however, by three young men, including her intended.  The Pirates of Penzance involves a young man, wrongfully indentured to a pirate crew until his 21st birthday.  Upon his release, he has his first real encounter with the fairer sex, a beautiful group of sisters.  The program is directed by Dr. Julie Anne Wieck and accompanied by Dr. Lark Powers.\n\nTickets for this family-friendly event will be available in Bryan Hall beginning at 7 p.m. on the night of the performance.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students with ID, and free for children 12 and under. The Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers will also be holding a bake sale at intermission.   All proceeds from ticket sales and bake sale go directly to the student ensembles for music, performances/productions, and tours.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n&nbsp;\n\n&nbsp;
