2022 WSU Military-Affiliated Student Symposium

WSU is holding the 4th annual Military-Affiliated Student Symposium: theme Transition and Resiliency. The purpose of the symposium is to strengthen WSU’s military-affiliated student community by elevating student voices, showcasing new resources and achievements for WSU’s military-affiliated students, and uncovering new needs, possibilities, and aspirations as this community looks to the future.

The event will include featured speakers as well as opportunities for discussion. Students, staff, alumni, and community partners associated with all campuses in the WSU system are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided for those attending in person.

This event is the perfect opportunity for WSU community to celebrate our student veterans, learn about the challenges and opportunities they face, and engage directly with them during interactive sessions and a special dinner at the Lewis Alumni Center. Key events are as follows:

• 0730 Flag Raising (7:30 am) – sponsored by WSU Pullman’s student veteran join campus community and WSU’s ROTC cadets/midshipmen as they celebrate our student veterans with a ceremonial flag raising and wreath laying at WSU’s Veteran Memorial, 450 Veterans Way.
• 0830 Welcome and Year in Review (8:30 am, CUB) – Provost Elizabeth Chilton will open welcome attendees, who will then hear from the Task Force on system-wide initiatives and milestones to ensure that Washington State University is veteran ready to support our military affiliated students to and through higher education and beyond.
• 0930 Veteran Resiliency (9:30 am, CUB) – join Gen Jim Cook (USA, Ret) as he shares his insights into building resilience for veterans, first responders, and their families. Jim is the current Commander of the Washington State American Legion owner of JTCWorld, Executive Director for the Tillicum Community Center, retired Brigadier General with over 34 years of military service.
• 1300 Education Town Hall (1:00 pm, CUB) – hosted by WSU’s Veteran Student Support Services and Passport Coordinator, Oscar Martinez, this session is an opportunity for students, staff, and community members to ask questions of and engage in discussions with a network of university services departments who support students through their academic journey.
• 1400 Health and Wellness Panel (2:00 pm, CUB) – WSU’s Veteran and Military Affiliated Student Center Manager, Penny Martinez, will host a panel of veteran health and wellness experts to highlight challenges faced by student veterans and the resources that are available to serve them.
• 1500 Career Development Workshop (3:00 pm, CUB) – Carson College of Business MBA Veterans is proud to sponsor an interactive career readiness workshop by Sara Blewett. Sarah has 20 years’ experience in industry, organizational development, and veteran transition, and will focus on the importance of purpose, values and unique attributes of veteran employees.
• 1630 Reflections/Closing Remarks (4:30 pm, CUB)
• 1700 Dinner (5:00 pm) – hosted at WSU’s Lewis Alumni Centre, our dinner will be a final opportunity for participants to connect and build our Cougar veteran community.
