Faculty workshop-Generous Thinking

Bundy Reading Room

About the event

Join the Office of Research for our third annual Research Week! This year, featured events include competitions for seed and travel funding, matchmaking flash talks, and workshops for faculty and graduate students. We will announce competition winners and recognize research achievements by faculty and staff during an awards ceremony and reception. All are welcome to come and take advantage of professional development and networking opportunities.

WSU welcomes Kathleen Fitzpatrick from Michigan State University, who will lead faculty in an exploration of how generosity and collaboration can help us positively reimagine our research, teaching, and professional relationships, based on the ideas in her recent book, Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick is Director of Digital Humanities and Professor of English at Michigan State University. Prior to assuming this role in 2017, she served as Associate Executive Director and Director of Scholarly Communication of the Modern Language Association. She is author of Generous Thinking: The University and the Public Good (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019), as well as Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy (NYU Press, 2011) and The Anxiety of Obsolescence: The American Novel in the Age of Television (Vanderbilt University Press, 2006). She is director of MESH, a research and development unit at MSU focused on the future of scholarly communication, and project director of Humanities Commons, an open-access, open-source network serving more than 17,500 scholars and practitioners in the humanities. She serves on the editorial or advisory boards of numerous publications and projects including the Open Library of the Humanities, Luminos, the Open Annotation Collaboration, and thresholds. She is a member of the board of directors of the Council on Library and Information Resources and of the Educopia Institute, and is Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.
