High school students to compete for $100,000 in alternative energy challenge

More than 500 students from 40 schools in Washington and Idaho will compete for up to $100,000 in cash prizes at Alaska Airlines’ Imagine Tomorrow competition.

Hosted by Washington State University’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, Imagine Tomorrow is WSU’s annual problem-solving competition for high school students. The competition challenges students to seek new ways to support the transition to alternate energy sources with a primary focus on energy sustainability. The student teams choose among four challenges, including aerospace, biofuels, the built environment, and food, energy, and water. They research the topic and develop innovative technologies, designs, or plans to mobilize behavior.

Student teams will present their projects to judges and the public on Saturday, May 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the CUB Junior and Senior ballrooms.

Jim Hanna, Director for Datacenter Sustainability at Microsoft, will be the keynote speaker for Saturday’s award ceremony.

The keynote address and awards ceremony will be held in the CUB Senior Ballroom on Saturday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

The competition is sponsored by 39 corporate, educational and scientific organizations, including Alaska Airlines, The Boeing Company, BP America Inc., Northwest Advanced Renewable Alliance, and McKinstry.
