About the event

Professor Robert J. Miller (Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma) is currently a professor at the Sandra Day O’conner College of Law at Arizona State University and serves as interim Chief Justice for the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Court of Appeals and Appellate Judge for the Courts of Appeals of the Shawnee Tribe, the Grand Ronde Tribe, and Northwest Inter-Tribal Court System. The “Doctrine of Discovery” was a concept used by European monarchies in order to legitimize the colonization of lands outside of Europe. This also established a spiritual, polical, and legal justification for seizure of land not inhabited by Christians. The Doctrine of Discovery has been used to take lands that were occupied by Indigenous People including North America.
