About the event

Join UREC as we rise, release, and dance in a FREE Zumba class and social event for the One Billion Rising global movement to raise awareness and stop violence against women and girls. Together, we’ll make our voices heard as we dance for a cause and show the world what one billion looks like!

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at seven billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Now, every February, women rise in hundreds of countries across the world to show local communities and the world what one billion looks like and to shine a light on the rampant injustice that survivors most often face. Women rise through dance to express joy in the community and to celebrate the fact that they have not been defeated by the violence.

This year, One Billion Rising has chosen the theme of “Raise the Vibration, Rise for Revolution.” One Billion Rising’s campaign will focus on “action, art, connection, imagination and love”. To learn more about the One Billion Rising campaign, visit http://www.onebillionrising.org/.
