Psychology Department Undergraduate Research Symposium

Please join the Psychology department for its annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, April 30th, from 3 to 5 p.m. This event highlights undergraduate research to a broad audience.

This year’s symposium will be held virtually and is open to members of the WSU community, family, and friends. We invite you to join us for the following events:

3-4 p.m.: Keynote speaker Dr. Liliana Lengua will present her research on factors contributing to childhood resilience titled Bioecological Model of the Effects of Economic Disadvantage and Adversity on Children’s Developmental Outcomes.

Liliana Lengua, Ph.D. is University of Washington’s Maritz Family Foundation Professor of Psychology and has directed Center for Child and Family Well-Being (CCFW; https://ccfwb.uw.edu/) since its founding in 2011. A child clinical psychologist, she studies the effects of adversity on children and examines risk and protective factors that contribute to children’s resilience or vulnerability. Her research has focused on the contributions of children’s temperament, coping, and parenting in contributing to children’s responses to adversity.

Her most current research probes the effects of low income on the development of self-regulation in preschool children, including studies of infants, preschool, and preadolescent children. She investigates family adversity, parenting, and neurobiological factors that account for the effects of low income on children’s well-being. In addition, she has developed an evidence-based parenting program infused with mindfulness practices to enhance parenting effectiveness and support parent well-being.
