About the event

Whether you are hoping to tackle a Northwest volcano this summer or add to your repertoire of winter skills, this local trip provides an educational opportunity to develop basic mountaineering skills.

In this introductory overnight course, participants will learn basic snow travel techniques, including: kicking steps, rest step, self-belay with ice axe, self-arrest with ice axe, and sitting glissade. This course will not cover glacier travel or crevasse rescue (see our Crevasse Rescue Skills Clinic).

Trip rating is level 2. No experience necessary, good physical conditioning necessary. Beginners and experienced individuals who would like to brush up on skills are encouraged to attend.

There will be a pre-trip meeting on March 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the Outdoor Recreation Center. At this meeting you will meet your fellow trip participants and trip leaders, see the trip itinerary, and you will have the opportunity to check out group gear and camping equipment.

Trip cost includes: group gear, camping equipment, skill instruction, transportation, mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, and helmet. Participants need to provide their own hat, gloves, and other clothing. Plan to be in the snow all day and overnight. Dress in synthetic layers and be prepared for a damp, cold environment. No cotton clothing please. Water resistant (or waterproof) outerwear required.

If you need to cancel, please email orc@wsu.edu.
