Sherman and Mabel Smith Pettyjohn Memorial Lecture in History
Terrell Library Atrium, Pullman, WA 99164
About the event
In the third annual Sherman and Mabel Smith Pettyjohn Memorial Lecture in History, Dr. Josh Reid (Snohomish), University of Washington, will give an invited lecture on Indigenous exploration in the Pacific Ocean World in the 1800s. This presentation examines how Comekala, a Mowachaht from Vancouver Island, and Ranald MacDonald, a Chinook from the Columbia River, shaped history through their explorations of the Pacific during the long nineteenth century. Separately, their ocean-spanning mobilities exemplify their efforts at shaping Indigenous futures while bringing the people and places of the Pacific Ocean into world history.
