About the event

Dr. Ian Burke, Professor of Weed Science at WSU, will be presenting:

Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation in Weed Management for Pacific Northwest Wheat

Economic, climatic, and evolutionary challenges abound in wheat production and particularly for management of weeds. Pacific Northwest wheat growers, by necessity, are focused on minimizing input costs as a hedge against varying climatic conditions and commodity prices. Weed management in wheat is also highly dependent on the use of herbicides, and many of those herbicides are failing due to evolution of herbicide resistance. Together, these factors have forced fundamental changes in weed science research at both the applied and fundamental levels. Development of novel traits through collaboration with plant breeders, evaluation of emerging technologies for reducing overall herbicide use, and incorporation of evolutionary thinking are essential ingredients for an impactful PNW focused weed science program.

Session 1: Dr. Burke’s Seminar (10:00-11:00am PST)

Session 2: Roundtable discussion (11:00-12:00pm PST)

Roundtable Discussion Objectives: Follow-up questions from seminar and discussion of possible research collaboration opportunities.

Registration will provide entry into both sessions (link above).
