About the event

September‘s Read: Big Chicas Don’t Cry by Annette Chavez Macias

Four Mexican-American cousins navigate love, loss, and the meaning of family over the course of one memorable year in this heartfelt family drama. Mari, Erica, Selena, and Gracie were once inseparable—sharing secrets, traditions, and a fierce love for their abuelita. But their idyllic childhood ended when Mari’s parents divorced, forcing her to move away and causing their tight-knit bond to unravel.

Fifteen years later, each cousin faces her own struggles: Mari has the big house and handsome husband but feels trapped in her marriage; Erica’s boyfriend just dumped her and her new boss hates her; Selena struggles with identity, feeling not Mexican enough for her family and not white enough for her colleagues; and Gracie, a Catholic school teacher, harbors an all-consuming crush but can’t trust herself when it comes to romance.

When tragedy reunites them, the cousins must decide whether they can remember their abuelita’s lessons about family and forgiveness—or if fifteen years of separation is too much to overcome. This life-affirming novel celebrates the enduring ties of family, Mexican-American culture, and the power of second chances.

Ready to get lit-erary with your fellow Cougs? Join us for our September book discussion, where we’ll dive into this beautiful story of family, forgiveness, and finding your place in the world during Latinx Month. Plus, we’re adding a fun twist this month—send Moana, the Club Leader, a picture of your bookshelf via email at global.outreach@wsu.edu before the meeting! We’ll create a fun collage to share and discover what fellow Global Campus students love to read.

Five FREE digital copies via Kindle for eligible students who register first (*restrictions apply). You’re still welcome to join with your own copy!
