Dealing with Emergence: More Happy Little Accidents and Fewer Unfortunate Surprises 

When we say that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, we’re talking about Emergence. It’s something we plan on to create good products.  But some emergence is a total surprise and cannot be predicted in advance.  This creates a challenge when new technologies like AI or complex computer models come along.  How do we know they are right?

This presentation will describe the issues and propose that some “old technology” models should be retained to help us check the accuracy of new methods. And it turns out that some very simple ways to do that can be used many useful ways—-including helping you work class assignments and make better decisions.  These very simple methods will be covered so that you can use them immediately.

About the Speaker: 

Steve Holt is a Socio-Technical Systems Engineer and Technical Fellow at Boeing. He has a special interest in how to lead large scale, complex projects and why success requires both technology and people. Steve is a member of the Theory of Constraints International Certification Organization and learned Theory of Constraints from WSU.
