Emotional Health Monday: Flash talks

About the event

Experts from across the WSU system deliver practical information on emotional health topics and connect you with a network of support in your campus community.

You’ll hear multiple short talks (roughly 10-15 minutes each) in the one-hour window from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Topics include the following:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Fostering well-being: How to manage difficult emotions
  • Suicide prevention: Tips for talking with someone in crisis
  • How to help a friend in an abusive relationship
  • Mindfulness to decrease stress

Links for remote access to the Zoom sessions can be found on the event website.

The flash talks are part of the annual Safety, Health, and Security Fair, which will continue throughout the week.

Wellness Wednesday
Topics to include:

  • Understanding, treating and preventing substance misuse
  • Sleep hygiene basics
  • Preventing sexually transmitted infections: The importance of using barrier methods

Life Essentials Thursday
Topics to include:

  • Money-saving meals for everyone
  • Bike maintenance: The importance of the ABC quick safety check before a ride
  • Bystander intervention: Creating a safer campus and community
  • How to use a fire extinguisher

Fun Facts Friday
Topics to include:

  • Updates on the treatment of Chlamydia
  • Safety considerations for field research
  • Healthy pets make healthy owners
  • Alcohol use disorder: Why is the gold standard treatment outcome shifting from complete abstinence to low-risk drinking?

In-person events at the Safety, Health, and Security Fair
In addition to the online flash talks, be sure to attend the following in-person events
on Tuesday, October 19 in the Compton Union Building Senior Ballroom.

  • Awards ceremony
    11:30 a.m.
    President’s Safety, Health, and Security Award
  • Resource fair
    9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    Representatives from local organizations will showcase products and services designed to improve quality of life. Officials from university departments and administrative units will also be on hand to share information about campus resources.
