PRESENTER: Dr. Donald Warne, MD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University

TITLE: Indigenous Determinants of Health and Strengths-Based Approaches to Indigenous Wellbeing

Dr. Warne is an acclaimed physician, distinguished public health leader, and one of the world’s preeminent scholars in Indigenous health, health education, policy, and equity. He currently serves as Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health and Provost Fellow for Indigenous Health Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. A member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, he comes from a long line of traditional healers and medicine men. Throughout his career, Dr. Warne has bridged clinical care, research, education, and policy to advance health equity for Indigenous communities globally, including creating the first Indigenous health-focused MPH and PhD programs in the U.S. and Canada.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Indigenous Peoples tend to approach health as an equilibrium of spirituality, traditional medicine, biodiversity, and the interconnectedness of all that exists—leading to fundamentally different understandings of health and wellbeing. This talk will explore how Indigenous determinants of health align with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and highlight strengths-based, rights-centered approaches to Indigenous wellbeing. The presentation will also discuss recommendations for increasing Indigenous-led health research and practice, expanding policy tools for non-Indigenous institutions, recognizing Indigenous Peoples as rights holders, and engaging Indigenous representatives as co-leads in policy and decision-making at local, national, and global levels.
