Public Square: Bridging the gender gap

Gender inequalities are nothing new. People of different genders have experienced persistent disparities in health, education, economics, politics and other aspects of society.

Many are familiar with economic gender gaps: U.S. women earn 82 cents for every $1 earned by their male counterparts. This affects women of color unevenly—while Asian women earn 90 cents per men’s $1, Black women 62 cents, American Indian women 57 cents, and Latina women 54 cents, respectively. Over one year, this gap means a difference in income of more than $10,000 for all women, with a larger gap for women of color. Over a 40-year career, the result is earning $250,000 – $1,000,000+, with even greater disparities for those who are transgender, transitioning, or gender non-conforming.

There are myriad other kinds of gender inequalities. Join us at the CCE Public Square as an expert panel will discuss what the gender gap means to them—and what might be done about it. WSU faculty, staff, and students will consider questions such as why people, particularly people of color, are disproportionately being affected by the gender gaps? What underlying aspects of gender gaps perpetually undervalue women, trans and gender non-conforming people and how does this affect their ability to enter male-dominated and heteronormative spaces?

Participants will gain insight into what is happening—and what you can do—to understand gender disparities and what we can do to push for an equitable society for all, regardless of gender identity.

This discussion will take place Tuesday, Mar. 9 at  4 p.m. and streamed live via Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent out to registrants on the day of the event.
