“Distant Worlds – Alien Life?” explores the possibility of life on other planets. It gives the limits of biology as we know it, then intersects those constraints with what we know about Milky Way exoplanets. Imaginative visualizations of possible life forms are animated in a fulldome experience.

Recent developments in the production of microdroplets have demonstrated that chemical reactions can be accelerated by orders of magnitude. While the exact reasoning of kinetic increase is not fully known, very little research has occurred for inorganic reactions within microdroplets. In conjunction with a recently constructed ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) system, kinetic information and stability constants can be determined for the products of microdroplet reactions. IM-MS allows for increased confidence in the determination of the collisional-cross section (CCS) as well as the mobility of the ion.

Emerging and next-generation supercomputers have nodes that are becoming more powerful and complex, with a set of hosts, e.g., CPUs, and a set of devices, e.g., GPUs, on their nodes. During an application’s execution on such a supercomputer, load imbalances occurring within a node – induced by the application or induced by system noise and other complexities of the node’s hardware – slow down the application’s execution significantly.

Transient faults are becoming a significant concern for emerging extreme-scale high performance computing (HPC) systems. This nascent problem is exacerbated by technology trends toward smaller transistor size, higher circuit density and the use of near-threshold voltage techniques to save power. They could corrupt the execution of long-running scientific applications by leading to either SDCs (incorrect values in outputs) or soft failures (abnormal termination, e.g., process crashes).

This two week-long workshop will feature presentations by cybersecurity experts, research presentations, industry best practices, hands-on tutorials, a student poster session, networking opportunities, field trips to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory and Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center, optional picnic on Memorial Day, food, and fun.
This session will discuss emerging concepts that can enhance skills for new and experienced clinical preceptors. Participants will discuss models, evidence and practices that can enhance efficient precepting within the current frameworks of Competency-based Practice and Entrustable Professional Activities. The workshop will include discussion of routine and challenging clinical teaching scenarios, peer-to-peer experiences and sharing of best practices.
