About the event

October’s Read: Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally Owens, beautiful sisters who were raised by their eccentric aunts, grew up in a household where magic was part of everyday life. But the gift they’ve inherited is more curse than blessing—men they love are doomed to die. Now adult women with very different lives, the sisters must come together to confront a family curse and discover that sometimes the only way out of a spell is deeper into it.

This enchanting tale weaves together themes of love, loss, sisterhood, and the supernatural, exploring how women find strength in each other and the magic that exists in everyday life. With its atmospheric small-town setting and richly developed characters, Practical Magic has captivated readers for decades with its blend of romance, family drama, and just the right touch of witchcraft.
