Boeing-WSU Speaker Series: Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace

About the event

Sue Paish will discuss the importance of Emotional Intelligence in the workplace by sharing lessons learned along her career journey as an engineer while living and working in four countries, nine cities, at multiple companies, and on lots of airplanes. Sue is the vice president and senior chief engineer of Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) Engineering Structures and Mechanical Systems, where she is responsible for driving engineering excellence in BDS Systems and ensuring the technical integrity and success of BDS development and production programs. Her focus is on proactive risk identification and mitigation, and rapid resolution of the top BDS structural/mechanical technical risk/issues/opportunities and key technical decisions through personal engagement and leveraging the extensive knowledge base of Boeing’s technical fellows and subject matter experts.

Paish also serves as the BDS Structures and Production engineering capability leader, with leadership responsibility for all structures and production engineers across BDS. Previously, Paish was director of Structures Engineering for BDS, where she was responsible for strengthening the mechanical and structural engineering capabilities, implementing new strategies, and overseeing engineering functional excellence across all BDS programs. She also led the BDS Engineering Design Centers in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Washington and the southern United States (Alabama, Florida, and Texas). Paish also served as chief engineer for Boeing Global Services where she led the engineering team through the business unit stand-up and was responsible for the technical excellence of the engineer and technologist workforce as well as the technical integrity and safety of Boeing Global Services products and services. She also oversaw compliance with the regulatory standards and acted as the primary technical interface with the Federal Aviation Administration. Prior to this role, Paish served as the chief project engineer for all heritage Boeing and McDonnell Douglas out-of-production commercial airplanes and was responsible for their safety and product integrity. Additionally, she has held several leadership positions in Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), including director of BCA engineering Southern California and program positions supporting 787 and 777.

Prior to joining Boeing, she was a design engineer supporting airplane programs for Dornier, Bombardier, and a Rolls-Royce subsidiary. Paish holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba.
