About the event

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Dr. Fred Gittes, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Washington State University. Please join us as Dr. Gittes  present his talk, “How Berry’s phase comes out of geometry.”

Meet for refreshments before the lecture from 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.

Abstract:
In this pedagogical talk, I will introduce the geometric  concepts of connection and parallel transport. I’ll then show how these concepts provide a natural framework and motivation for Berry’s phase, a central and often puzzling feature in quantum mechanics. This discussion will complement textbook developments of Berry’s phase.
