Title: Scholarship Opportunities for Cybersecurity Students

Abstract: This seminar will cover several exciting opportunities for cybersecurity students. First is WSU’s CyberCorps SFS program. This program provides scholarships for cybersecurity undergraduates and graduate students, funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In return for their scholarships, recipients must agree to work in government after graduation in a position related to cybersecurity at the state, local, tribal, or federal level, for a period equal to the length of the scholarship. Next is another NSF program, the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES), which is a study-and-research-abroad program for which WSU has partnered with Linköping University in Sweden. Students will be hosted by LiU’s Cybersecurity research team with English as the working language. Finally, there is the Cyber Service Academy, which aims to promote higher education in all disciplines of cyber, providing students with hands-on, real-world opportunities. CSA is another scholarship-for-service program that specifically requires recipients to work at the DoD after graduation.

Speaker Bio: Assefaw Gebremedhin is Berry Family Distinguished Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University, where he leads the Scalable Algorithms for Data Science (SCADS) Lab. He is also the Director and Lead PI of the Department of Defense-funded VICEROY Northwest Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CySER), Director of the new CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) program at WSU, and Director of a Department of Education-funded Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program that focuses on training PhD students in AI for complex engineering applications.
