About the event

Ana Ballesteros Pena is a visiting scholar in the school this semester based at Complutense University Madrid.  Her research is on gender and policy on prisons and immigration detention, mostly in Spain but also in a comparative perspective.  She will be giving a talk in the School on Monday, October 14th, from 11:00 to noon in conference room Johnson Tower 807 and via Zoom.  The title of the talk is Gender Equality in Prison Reform in Spain, based on her recent research with Maria Bustelo and Amy Mazur.

Maria, Ana and Amy will also be doing a roundtable on their in-progress edited book at the Foley Institute on October 29th at 4:30 with Faith Lutze (Criminal Justice) as discussant.  The title of the event is Gender Equality Behind Bars: A Comparative Policy Perspective.

Please mark your calendars for both events and let your students know about the Foley event.  Also, if you would be interested in Ana coming to your classes to talk about any aspect of her research, she would be happy to do so at both graduate and undergraduate levels (see below for list of potential topics). She is also more than happy to meet with you.  She is here until mid-December.

  • Women’s Prisons in Spain: Respect Unites and Responsibilization Strategies
  • Gender equality in prison: formulation, implementation and dilemmas of public policies
  • Immigration detention and containment practices in the EU periphery: The Canary Islands case
  • The politics of immigration detention in Canada
