About the event

Energy Systems Innovation Center along with the Advanced Grid Instittute hosts Mr. Andrew Musgrave, who will present “Small-Signal Stability Analysis of High-IBR Systems
Using Black-box EMT Models”

Overview
The high levels of IBR penetration that are increasingly seen in power systems around the world pose significant challenges to assessing stability with existing tools. IBR sub-synchronous oscillations are typically studied with EMT simulation, where high computation times render comprehensive assessments of many operating conditions and contingencies impractical. This talk will present a small-signal method for assessing IBR sub-synchronous oscillations where IBR small-signal models are obtained by applying the vector fitting algorithm to admittance scans of black-box EMT models. This model fitting approach allows the format for high-fidelity models most commonly made available from IBR OEMs to be used to study IBR sub-synchronous oscillations in the small-signal domain, with computation times orders of magnitude smaller than those of system-level EMT simulation.

Bio
Mr. Andrew Musgrave is a power systems EIT and software developer at Powertech Labs, where he has served as the lead developer for the ModFit tool to conduct EMT perturbation tests and fit small-signal models for use in SSAT, in addition to participating in power system consulting studies related to IBR stability. Prior to joining Powertech, Andrew completed his M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia and his Bachelors in Engineering Physics at Carleton University.
