Introduction to NiTinol. A Tutorial and Design Guide

Presented by Dan Clingman, Chief Executive Officer, Piezo Dynamics LLC

Abstract:

NiTinol is a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) metal that exhibits a solid-state phase change between martensite and an austinite crystal structures.  This phase change provides ether actuation or super elastic behavior. The phase change is driven ether by temperature and stress.  When temperature driven, the material has actuator properties that provide a magnitude higher energy density over other actuator technologies.    The stress driven phase transition provides a super elastic spring with nearly constant force over 8% strain.

Designing with this alloy is challenging as the material must be conditioned by cold work, heat treatment and training to provide usable properties.  This presentation will describe the process and analysis to develop useable actuation.
