In observance of National Nutrition Month, join us Saturday March 1 for a drop-in family-friendly art activity between 10:30am and 12:30pm, and a tour of “The Art of Food” exhibition beginning at 11:00am. SPEAKER: Dr. Laura Bartley, Institute of Biological Chemistry, WSU
BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Laura Bartley is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Biological Chemistry at Washington State University. She relocated to WSU in July of 2020 after serving as Visiting Associate Professor at Kyoto University in 2019-2020 and as an Assistant and then Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma, from 2010-2019. Prior to starting her own lab, she earned her B.A. in Biology from Swarthmore College, her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Stanford University, served as a AAAS Science Policy Fellow at the USDA, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California at Davis and the Joint BioEnergy Institute. Toward improving plants, especially grasses, for biorefining, Bartley’s lab group uses molecular genetics, systems biology, and biochemistry to examine grass-diverged aspects of cell wall biosynthesis and regulation, root and shoot vegetative development, and the impact of cell wall changes on plant physiology. Dr. Bartley’s research has been funded by the US-DOE, USDA, and US-NSF.

Dr. McPherson is a Professor and Interim Vice Dean for Research. He is also the Director of the Program of Excellence in Addictions Research (PEAR) at the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Within PEAR, he is the Head and Principal Investigator of the Analytics and Psychopharmacology Laboratory (APPL). He is involved in multiple research projects ranging from basic human toxicology to spatial epidemiology to the health economics of new therapeutics. Currently, his primary area of foci is on the leveraging contingency management in combination with putative pharmacotherapies for alcohol, alcohol and tobacco combined, and methamphetamine and opioid use combined. His colloquium Diversifying the Statistical Toolkit to Advance Biomedical Research is on March 20th.

Ostrom, who retired from WSU in 1981 after 21 years as a WSU Mathematics Department faculty member. This year’s Ostrom Lecture titled “Flexible Filaments: Just Go With The Flow.” will be delivered by Dr. Lisa Fauci. Dr. Fauci is the Pendergraft Nola Lee Haynes Professor of Mathematics at Tulane University in the Department of Mathematics and is the 2023 Inductee to the National Academy of Sciences.
