Pullman was home from the time he arrived in 1989 driving a U-Haul towing a 1969 Volkswagen bug, with a blind cat and an adopted Florida greyhound. Steve grew his career as an advocate for students, champion of academic rigor, and thought leader in teaching practices that improve learning and produce outstanding veterinarians.
To celebrate Steve’s passion and commitment to “make teaching matter,” the college is renaming a fund he helped establish. In 1995, Steve received the Merck AgVet Award for the most creative teaching innovation in national competition and was awarded $25,000. He donated the entire sum to start the WSU Teaching Creativity Endowment to improve veterinary instruction and provide support for the Diagnostic Challenges where veterinary students take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world medical cases. Twenty-six years later we are proud to announce the fund is being renamed the Steve Hines Endowment for Creativity in Teaching.
“I am most proud of the impact I made on individual students and DVM classes. I told my students on the first day of class that I intended to push them, because I thought that was my job, but I also listened with open ears and an open heart. I maintain to this day that I
learned much more from my students than I ever taught.”
Steve enters the next phase of life with excitement about the adventures ahead and plans to volunteer for the Diagnostic Challenges program and contribute to the college in veterinary alumni relations and development.
