La Granada: Short Films Inspired by Food
On Monday, February 3 from 5:00-6:30 pm, join WSU student filmmaker Hollen Foster-Grahler at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU for a screening of her short film “La Granada”. Shot in Aberystwyth, Wales, the film is a visual journey exploring feminine rage, empowerment, and community through surrealist imagery and movement. The title and central emblem of the film, la granada, is the Spanish word for both “pomegranate” and “grenade”—simultaneously a symbol of femininity and destruction. Through this dual meaning, the film examines the precarious nature of womanhood: What happens when that potential energy is finally released?
Presented by Nolan Middleton, PhD student.

Energy Systems Innovation Center (ESIC) hosts Modeling and Control of Multi-Phase Electric Machines: Advancing Transportation Electrification presented live by our very own Professor Anjan Bose
Overview
This is a roundtable discussion rather than a presentation. Let us explore some of the difficult steps that need to be taken in moving towards more renewable energy. The challenges depend on geography, the physical structure of the grid, the availability of generation resources, the regulatory structure, and many other factors. For a large country as the USA these factors vary widely and so will the solutions. Looking across the world, these factors multiply exponentially which is why the meetings of the nations to discuss a world strategy, known as the COP annual meetings, have agreed on very little.

The fear of low-level ionizing and non-ionizing radiation has been present almost since the discovery of radiation. This fear has often served as an impediment to the uses of radiation and radioactive material for purposes that range from medical treatments to the generation of electric power. Given this background, it is important to understand results from the science of radiation biology especially with respect to low-level ionizing radiation exposure. To this end, the following questions will be addressed. What is the radiation induced cancer risks following whole body acute radiation, including the potential effects of cancer and genetic damage? Are the risks of radiation induced genetic effects almost equal to the risks for cancer? Does radiation exposure increase the “genetic load”? What is the risk from internally deposited radioactive materials that have non-uniform distribution? What is the risk of bone cancer and birth defects induced by 90Sr-90Y? What is the risk for thyroid cancer induced by 131I. Is 239Pu the “most hazardous substance known to man”? What are the risks for liver, bone, and lung cancer from 239Pu. Finally, there will be a discussion about the costs to society driven in part by the fear of radiation.

The digitalization of grid operation and control occurred in the 1960s with the hard wired measurement, communication and control being replaced by digital measurements and control signals being communicated on microwave channels. Thes SCADA-AGC systems were further augmented with analytical applications to develop the complete EMS in the 70s. These EMS have evolved into very large systems because of the continuing development of computation and communications. With the cost reductions of digitalization, these grid operation and control technologies are now being applied to the distribution systems and operator training.
